Curriculum
Our Primary Division comprises Grades 1, 2, and 3. Our curriculum is designed to meet the needs of the 21st century, of individual students as well as the needs of local and global communities.
We keep in mind the Ministry of Education’s outcomes while offering an enriched curriculum far exceeding public school standards and expectations. Our program is rich, well-rounded, and respects learner interests.
Teaching Methods
The classroom is a dynamic environment, bringing together students from different backgrounds with various abilities and personalities. Being an effective teacher, therefore, requires the implementation of creative and innovative teaching strategies in order to meet students’ individual needs.
We believe in inquiry-based instruction promoting critical thinking.
What Does Theme-Based Education Look Like On A Day To Day Basis At Al Huda Elementary?
In the classroom studying Tornadoes as a part of their “Terrible Twisters” theme, students do all sorts of activities centered around the theme which enhances skills from all aspects of the curriculum.
While studying tornadoes, students would do something different yet related in every class, such as:
- In Language Arts, they read stories from different genres about tornadoes and work on their reading strategies and writing skills
- In World Knowledge, they learn what tornadoes are, how they are formed, where they mostly occur, and what kind of damage they cause
- In Health, they learn about tornado safety and how to make a survival kit
- In Islamic studies, they learn about Prophet Hud (AS) as his people were destroyed by strong winds which were very much like tornadoes
Theme-Based Education
We strive to integrate Islamic teachings and values in all core subjects and follow a theme-based curriculum. A theme-based curriculum means that each skill area of the curriculum is connected to a topic which we refer to as a theme.
Learning is an integrated process, and theme-based education is beneficial in several ways. Children of all ages benefit from the connections made across the curriculum. Rather than teaching each skill or topic in isolation students are encouraged to see that at different times of the day or through different subjects we can learn about different aspects of a larger topic. In turn, this helps students see connections and start to make their own connections from one experience to another. It also helps students become creative in their thinking, in investigating their own ideas as well as gaining a deeper understanding of academic concepts.
We also strive to provide differentiated learning according to students’ unique learning needs.
